What We Believe

Who We Are

We are a community (congregation) of Christians, gathering together frequently to worship God. We also encourage and pray for each other, and for those in our community, state, country, and world. We seek to share with those around us the Good News of God’s love and mercy found in Jesus Christ.

Gethsemane Lutheran Church is located at 2723 Orange Avenue, in La Crescenta, California - a suburb of Los Angeles. The congregation was founded in 1955 and includes individuals ages 1 to 90, with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Many visitors to Gethsemane Lutheran Church express that they feel as though they have spent Sunday morning with a friendly family. As Jesus’ disciples, it is our hope always to reflect Christ’s joy, love, peace, and mercy in all that we say and do and with all whom we meet.

We would like to invite you to join us at worship service on Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM. We also join together in learning at Sunday school, fellowship, community events, and other activities.

What We Believe

As Lutheran Christians, we believe that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone.

  • Grace. As human beings, we continually sin (fail to act according to God’s will). Because of our condition of sin, we can do nothing to save ourselves from evil or its punishment. We thank and praise God that he alone, by His grace (love for us, which we do not deserve), has accomplished all that is needed for our salvation, so that our sins are forgiven (taken away from us). He assures us that we will enjoy eternal life with Him in heaven. God shares His love with us through the Means of Grace.

  • Faith. God creates and then strengthens and sustains our faith. Faith (belief, acceptance, and trust) is the “outstretched hand” which receives God’s many promises, including His promises of forgiveness and eternal life. Faith is the only way through which a person receives God’s gifts and makes them his or her own.

  • Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only true God, and we worship him alone. He is both fully God and at the same time fully man. When Jesus died on the cross, he paid the complete price for our sins, taking our sin and its punishment upon Himself and giving us His righteousness in return. On the third day following His death, Jesus rose from the dead. In His resurrection, Jesus promises that all who believe in Him will also be raised on the last day to live with Him in peace and joy forever, in heaven.
